To all those who suffer from sadness or depression…

To all those suffering from sadness or depression, know that it isn’t your fault. It isn’t because you’re weak. It isn’t because you’re just not grateful enough. It isn’t because you’re just not religious enough. It isn’t because you don’t have enough faith. It isn’t because God is angry with you. To all the well-meaning people who tell you this, just smile. And know deep in your heart that the tests of God come in different forms to different people. And know that, by the help of God, every test can become a tool to get closer to Him. And that, verily, with hardship come ease–and like all things of this world–this too shall pass.

There should be another entry called: "To Those Whose Loved Ones Suffer From Sadness or Depression", because it's just as tough for them.

Thanks a lot, to the author of this great article. It’s so easied my worries, before i thought that is all my fault, causing me problems. Now I know, that is the test from my Lord.

Thank you so much for this! It speaks to my heart and others that I know. Depression is often a topic that people don’t talk about much or have a lack of understanding about (i.e. “just smile”). I appreciate this very much (and your writing in general, Masha’Allah)! And it is also very enlightening and helpful to gain the insight about using every test as a tool to get closer the Allah SWT. <3

I beleive that our lord Allah is nurturing and guiding us through these hardships and troubles, to get closer to him. I personally went through lot of hardships in my life and the outcome was that It got me closer to allah. When I was back home I saw people in the mosque praying for hours, they were so focused in their prayer and I asked my friend if you ask these people why you people are so focused in your prayer or Ebada, I am sure the true answers will be is that, they are passing through turbulence and hardships which navigated them to come to the home of Allah to seek refuge. But the sad part is as mentioned by Yasmin Mogahed is that we seeking refuge just to get rid of the problems through making Allah as a mean not as a goal. So allah may guide us to the right path so that we perceive things in its rights perspective. Some time I am thinking about the Quranic vers ENA AOLEYA ALLAHE LA KHAUFUN ALAIHEM WALA HUM YAHZANOON, ALDEENA AMANOO WA KANOO YATAQOON, LAHUMUL BUSHRA FEL HAYATE DUNYA WA FEL AKHERA LA TABDEELA LE KALEMATELLAHE DALEKA HUWAL FAUDUL ADEEM. I think and think about this verse and I went through a state of mind long before and I experienced it, though its by allah Fadal not by my own good deeds, So the cure for sadness depression anxiety is two thing as allah mentioned in quran those people who are Aoleya and those are the people who are free of fear and anxiety is because they have two qualities ALADEEN AMANOO WA KANOO YATAQOON. They beleive and they are MUTAQEE. these two things can releive every one from worldly matters no matter how much adversity and hardships one face but the inner world is peacefull the feelings one feel inside are full with tranquility. There is another verse in quran where Allah says and those who said Allah is our RAB they are get freed from fear and anxiety (ENA ALDEENA QALOO RABUNALLAH SUMASTAQAMOO TATANA DALU ALAIHEMUL MALAYEKA AL lA TAKHAFOO WA LA TAHDANOO. So keeping strong faith on allah as he is the True rab and turning back from worldly RABS, i.e bosses, money, etc and he or she remains persistent and consistent in his or her life about truely beleive that allah is my rab in its true meaning then he or she will feel it and i am telling it with experience because i went through such situation, though i couldnt remain consistant but still i remember the time when i felt it and expereinced it. Allah may guide me and all of us. W.Salam Muhammad Tariq ontario Canada.,

JADAKALLAH, Allah may give you reward in both world, I watched almost all these videos, posted by Yasmin Mogahed, it shifted my perspective from traditional beleifs to more refined, particularly when it comes to when we seek some thing or we want something desperately so we tend to turn to allah in order to get that thing, I think its not bad as allah mentioned in Soora Mudamel i.e RABUL MASHREQE WAL MAGHREBE LA ELAHA ELA HUWA FATAKHEDHU WAKEELA, It means that make allah as WAKEEL for your problems and what you want, but unfortunately we just turn to allah for the only purpose to get what we want and when we get it what we want then we turn back from allah, So remaining persistant and consistant in EBBADDA is the crux of ABOODEYAT.

Thanks for the wonderful words. I am sad and depressed because after more than 3 years of marriage and I am still childless. Society thinks I am barren and I am too scared to face the truth. Sometimes I just wish to vanish from this world because people keep asking me when I am going to have a baby… I seek console in the Quran but the pressure is really driving me crazy…

      Dear sister,

Seek refuge in Allah. Even when He withholds, He is giving. Open your heart so you can receive the gifts He will give you that are even better than what He has withheld from you.
